Better Futures With Bioneers

Better Futures With Bioneers

On a typically sunny Californian Friday, close to 2000 people descended upon the Marin Center hall to immerse in the 26th Bioneers conference.

Some of our team were there to reconnect with fellow Kiwis, entrepreneurs, global friends, and to make new connections.

Sessions ranged from enchanting rhythmical storytelling with Michael Meade (anthropologist) and John Densmore of The Doors, to lessons learnt in the wake of the Hurricane Sandy rebuild. Each and every contributor mesmerised the room with tales of their journey.

Bioneers was founded in 1990, to explore and embrace practical, visionary solutions for humanity's most pressing environmental and social challenges. As Annie Leonard (Executive Director, Greenpeace) stated, “Bioneers is a three-day pit-stop for all of us to refuel on our journey to a better world”.

There were a myriad of great quotes to coin the atmosphere of the weekend and to list them all would require a book, so here’s just a few of our faves:

The deepest power of the human soul is the imagination.
— Michael Meade, Storyteller/Anthropologist

If we’re going to combat this thing called climate change, whether it’s solar panel adoption, clean cars etc, we must move all segments of society forward together. Especially the poorest.

If our story is, ‘We’re screwed’, it absolutely destroys imagination, innovation and creative solutions.
— Paul Hawken, Project Drawdown
You have to bend down to find your calling, not rise up to reach it. What we learn to carry, will in time carry us.

You could say that our current justice system is set up to harm those that harm others...to show them what it feels like. I realised that I could be the warrior, the lawyer AND the healer all at the same time.
